Madie Thompson, M.A., LPC

Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychotherapist

There is a story that many people experience at some point during their life: Walking along the path of life, feeling different, perhaps not quite “right” or sometimes a bit “off.” You know that something is wrong, you just don’t know what to do about it. One day, along comes another person who points to the sky, perhaps to a star that you haven’t seen in quite that way before. Suddenly, because the star is pointed out, together you see what you yourself have never before seen quite so clearly – or perhaps have never even seen at all. Psychotherapy allows you to walk with another person who has dedicated their life learning to walk along side others; to be supportive, gently confrontational and to be a great listener so that you may see more clearly into your inner universe.

Often the people I work with are looking to better understand themselves or a situation with which they are struggling. Anxiety, fear and depression are common feelings that cause people to consider psychotherapy. I believe it is my job is to “walk” with people, helping them to better understand themselves and to empower their own ability to make positive life choices. I use a variety of approaches including psychodynamic, family systems and mindfulness-based cognitive and behavioral therapies. I specialize in helping people with issues associated with relationship, trauma, post traumatic stress (PTSD), serious mental illness and addictions.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with private practices in Washington, DC and Fairfax, VA. I received an MA in Counseling in 2002 and a BA in Social Work and Psychology in 1997. I have been working with children, adolescents, families and couples for more than 16 years.

Before entering private practice, I worked in foster care and adoptions and in outpatient mental health settings serving children, adolescents, adults and families. I have had extensive experience working with persons with severe mentally illness and addictions. One of my areas of specialization is working with families in crisis, including play therapy for young children.

Early in my career, I was awarded a grant which provided extensive training and specialization in foster care, adoption and the impact of a parent’s mental illness on their children. Consequently, I also specialize in trauma treatment for individuals as well as intergenerational trauma in families. I frequently provide marital and couples counseling for a wide variety of relationships and lifestyles.

I look forward to hearing from you to see how I might be of assistance to you on your life journey.
